Why a larger image can still look soft
Understand the difference between creating more pixels and recovering the detail that was present in the original source.
A resized image can report more pixels and still look less convincing when inspected closely. This happens because a fit operation can enlarge the existing grid. It creates an output at the requested dimensions, but those dimensions do not prove that lettering, texture or edges contain additional real detail.
Measure the enlargement before judging it
Suppose the source is 800 by 600 and the requested box is 1600 by 1600. The width constraint gives a scale of 2, while the height constraint gives about 2.6667. RSFrameFit chooses 2 and produces 1600 by 1200. Each source dimension has doubled. The original information is being displayed across a much larger number of output pixels.
Inspect meaningful edges rather than the whole preview
Look at small lettering, thin lines and diagonal boundaries at normal output scale. A smooth-looking thumbnail can conceal soft contours. Compare the source and output at their intended uses, then zoom in only to identify a problem you can already see. If the source was blurred or heavily compressed, fitting it to a larger box cannot reconstruct the missing original detail.
Return to a better source when possible
Find the original camera file, a larger export from the design application or a genuine vector master when the work was created as vectors. Exporting from that master can give the new dimensions meaningful detail. Resizing a small screenshot of the artwork is a different process. Keep the master accessible so that the smallest derivative does not become the source for every later use.
Choose the output for its actual job
An enlarged derivative may be acceptable for a modest preview and unsuitable for a large print. Judge it against the job rather than a general label such as high resolution. If the source is already adequate, avoid unnecessary enlargement by choosing an appropriate box. The fit tool offers high-quality browser smoothing, but it is not a detail-recovery or background-removal service.
