SIZING DECISIONS

Fit a landscape photograph inside a square limit

Work out the fitted dimensions and understand why a square width-and-height limit does not produce a square crop.

A upload form asks for an image no wider or taller than 1200 pixels. Your photograph is 2400 by 1600. Entering 1200 in both RSFrameFit fields keeps the complete photograph, but the result is not a 1200 by 1200 square. The distinction matters when a destination actually requires a crop.

Treat the fields as a bounding box

Maximum width and maximum height describe the box the image must fit inside. RSFrameFit uses the smaller width or height scale and applies it to both dimensions. This preserves the proportions of the complete image. It does not independently stretch the two axes, cut away the sides or add padding to make a new outer canvas.

Calculate the smaller scale

For a 2400 by 1600 source in a 1200 by 1200 box, the width scale is 1200 divided by 2400, or 0.5. The height scale is 1200 divided by 1600, or 0.75. The smaller scale is 0.5, giving a fitted image of 1200 by 800. Using the larger scale would make the image too wide for the requested box.

The fit calculation
ConstraintScaleResult at chosen scale
Width: 2400 → 12000.51200 pixels
Height: 1600 → 12000.75800 pixels

Compare fit, crop and padding

A fitted rectangle is suitable when the complete image must remain visible and only maximum dimensions are specified. A crop changes which parts are visible. Padding adds blank space around the fitted image to reach exact outer dimensions. Those are separate operations. Read the destination instructions closely and decide which operation they describe before treating every reference to square images as a fit request.

Verify the saved dimensions

Download the fitted PNG and inspect its dimensions in a file viewer. A landscape image should still look landscape, with the same recognizable proportions. If a form rejects the rectangle because it requires exact square dimensions, changing the fit values repeatedly will not solve the underlying mismatch. Use a suitable crop or canvas workflow and keep the uncropped master for other layouts.
